Math prerequisites and learning outcomes

Math 10C (grade 10 common) is the starting point for the -1 and -2 sequence. The pre-requisite is successful completion of grade 9 math. This course is intended for students who plan to pursue post-secondary studies. 

The topics covered in this course are

  • Measurement

  • Real Numbers
  • Polynomials
  • Relations and Functions
  • Linear Relations
  • Systems of Linear Equations

Math 10-3 This course is designed for students who intend to pursue a career in most trades. Students may enter this course with any mark in Math 9.

The topics covered in this course are:

  • Measurement
  • Geometry
  • Number
  • Algebra

Math 20-1 the pre-requisite for math 20-1 is Math 10C. This course is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical thinking skills identified for entry into post secondary programs that require the study of calculus. Examples of such programs are Engineering, Medicine and Commerce. Students should check the current entrance requirements for the post secondary program they are interested in pursuing. Students may enter this course with a passing mark in Math 10C.

  • binomial theorem

Math 20-2 The prerequisite for Math 20-2 is Math 10C.  This course sequence is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical thinking skills identified for post secondary studies in programs that do not require the study of calculus.

The topics covered in this course are:

  • Measurement
  • Geometry
  • Number and Logic
  • Statistics
  • Relations and Functions
  • Mathematics Research Project

Math 20-3 The prerequisite for Math 20-3 is Math 10-3.  This course sequence is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical thinking skills identified for entry into the majority of trades and for direct entry into the workforce.

The topics covered in this course are:

  • Measurement
  • Geometry
  • Number
  • Algebra
  • Statics

Math 30-1  the pre-requisite is math 20-1. This course continues to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical thinking skills identified for entry into post secondary programs that require the study of calculus. Examples of such programs are Engineering, Medicine and Commerce. Students should check the current entrance requirements for the post secondary program they are interested in pursuing. Students may enter this course with a passing mark in Math 20-1.

Math 31 - Prerequisite: Mathematics 30-1  This is an important course for students who will be taking any mathematics courses at university.
The main topics covered are:

  • derivatives, 
  • maximum and minimum value
  • problems, 
  • integration, and 
  • areas under and between curves.
